Subaru Head Gasket Repairs
Corning, NY
Unfortunately for any of you Subaru owners out there, head gasket failures have been a problem that you may have had to contend with. The most commonly-experienced issues deal with two overhead camshafts per cylinder bank engines, which were built into Subaru Outbacks from 1996-2000, as well as all pre-2000 Impreza Rs, Foresters, and Legacy GTs.But what does that mean, exactly? Well, the failure of a head gasket will result in coolant and combustion gas mixing. As you may already know, this is not how it's supposed to be--you'll just wind up with oily overflow in your coolant tank. Aside from this being inconvenient, it also smells terrible. And, if you don't address the head gasket problem in a timely manner, then the small leak can turn into a ‘blown' head gasket, which is considerably more difficult and costly to fix.
Back in 1999, Subaru attempted to address the problem with a new, single overhead camshaft engine. But this backfired horribly--the new head gaskets actually failed at a higher rate than those on the old engines. This time, the head gasket failure resulted in a leak between the motor's exterior and the coolant jacket (in the oil gallery). On top of it all, engine oil and/or antifreeze will gather on the gasket seam.
